How to read financial news as a long-term investor
Headlines are written to grab attention, and markets news is mostly about the next few days. If you invest for goals 10 or 20 years away, most of it should not change what you do.
Ask three questions before reacting to any story:
- Does this change my goal, my time frame or my income? Usually, no.
- Is this about the next few weeks or the next ten years? Most news is the former.
- Would I have made this decision if I had not read the headline today?
Stories that can matter: changes in tax rules, new SEBI regulations for mutual funds, changes to small-savings or EPF rates, and news about a fund house or scheme you hold. Those are worth a conversation.
Stories that rarely matter: daily index moves, "Sensex crashes" headlines, predictions of where markets will be next month, and lists of "best funds to buy now".
